Jesus is keeping my head above water, but some days, I just don’t have anything nice to say. The fact is, I’m three-babies-four-and-under in to this marriage and motherhood gig, and I’ve got some common as well as not-so-common crosses and challenges in my life right now. (“ God gives us all the grace we need, though, right?”) I knew that I hadn’t fooled anybody with my half-hearted, cliché attempts to stay positive during the evening. At the end of the evening, I climbed back into my old blue Odyssey feeling like I had done nothing but complain about my life. We giggled as we each tried to one-up each other on whose two-year-old was most like a tornado, whose infant slept the least number of hours in a row, and whose husband was away from home the most. Our conversation started out as so many “mommy talks” go, with broad, familiar questions like, Where do you live? How many children do you have? How old are they? It wasn’t very long, however, before our conversation took on a slightly negative tone. I was super-excited to make a new acquaintance and to have a little night out. A few weeks ago, the planets finally aligned for the three of us-all mothers of multiple small children under five years old-to meet up one evening at a local coffee shop. It can be as simple as telling yourself to have a good day or maybe a reminder that your future is bright. When you set your alarm or if you don’t use an alarm set a reminder on your phone that will go off every day when you wake up with a positive message.

Reread your favorite book or crack open a new one you've been dying to try. Sounds too good to be true, but simply reading is a great escape to get your mind off of negative things.

Focus your energy on those happy thoughts and you will begin to see a change in your attitude. They can be positive memories, good feelings you have toward your life, yourself or others, or just something that made you happy today. Whatever it is that you long to have probably won’t be important in a year, a month or even a week from now. Things can always be worse and you can always have less than what you have, so appreciate those things and forget about everything else. If you think about it, you will see that the situation isn’t the end of the world after all.įocus on what you have and who you are rather who you’re not and what you don’t have. Think about a positive that can come from the situation. When you’re feeling like the odds will never be in your favor and everything is going wrong, take a moment to pause and reflect. Here are a few things you can do to help change your outlook on life. Luckily you don’t have to be a negative nancy forever. Sometimes life can get you down but there is always a silver lining in every situation, whether it’s a lesson to be learned or something that could have a positive impact on the future. In otherwords, you’re kind of a pessimist. Do you find yourself always looking at the glass half empty instead of half full? Is it hard to find the positive when something doesn't go your way? You may have the Negative Nancy syndrome.
